The Art of NOT Swearing

Wow!

This is a record for me, two posts in one week...I still wouldn't get used to it! ;)

My youngest fell asleep this morning so I had time to type this up.

I still cannot get over this past weekend with the dropping of F-bombs at this conference I went to, especially from this guy who is quickly becoming a well-known name in the fitness industry with a big following.

I noticed him being picked up to speak at a few of these conferences recently. Within the past year or so, and after this weekend, I honestly don't know what the big deal was. His talk was extremely dry, and it was almost like he knew it so he would drop an F-bomb in.

He didn't read his crowd either, because I couldn't believe how boring it was. I looked around the room; people were on their cells phones, so I felt validated, I knew I wasn't the only one who felt this way.

The people who were on their cell phones shouldn't have been on their phones either, and I caught myself going on my cell phone from time to time this weekend, as I realized this I quickly put it away because it's disrespectful.

In wrestling or *cough* sports entertainment, if a match is getting boring and if good wrestlers are doing it right, they read the crowd and adjust accordingly. You can do the same thing with this to presentations. This guy didn't do that.

The presentations after this it almost seemed like people needed to fit in so they swore and they didn't need to because their presentations were great.

If you want to read my experience with the whole weekend, you can check it out here (Experience At The First Ever Evolve Strength Symposium)

I don't want to pick apart this guy, but he slept in every day as well. Granted, I don't know much about presenting at big conferences, but you don't do that.

You should be honoured to speak, and you should show it!

That is another thing that is lost. Is it normal to sleep in now for important events?

Again, I am not picking on the guy he is probably a pretty cool guy to hang with, but I am wondering if this is the "norm" now.

When I owned Bisbee's Fitness Experience, I hired this lady that had no experience what so ever, because she was excellent in her interview (I also found out to have the best employees you have to cultivate them, degree's or certs don't mean shit,(see what I did there swearing needs to flow, and it also needs to mean something IF you swear.) ) She went on to get her NASM personal training certification and she was an excellent trainer.

All the clients loved her too; There was just one small problem. She was late at least 10 minutes with every shift she had. I couldn't fire her because I would have been so screwed at the time and I knew from experience I probably wouldn't be able to find another trainer. (I lived in a small town)

With her being late, that wasn't fair to the clients, and ultimately that put me in a bad light.

When I moved to Edmonton, I had an interview at a gym that I got through networking. The guy was at least 40 minutes late to interview me, and he had sweat pants on and a ball cap.

What a way to leave a first impression!

Is punctuality dead?

I don't blame these people that cussed like sailors during the conference. It's inbred in our culture now.

Why is that?

It was my moms birthday the other day, so I went to the store to pick up a birthday card, and there were a few cards that had some words like shit and stuff in it.

Why?

It is even in the music we listen to now. I am really digging a new country singer named Morgan Wallen, he has a new song that is a pop song called Heartless, and every 5th word is shit.

I still like him though. I will give him the benefit of the doubt, just like how I will provide these presenters that I didn't like, the benefit of the doubt. Maybe these people were nervous, so they started to swear.

Presenting is HARD work. Trust me on this! Took me a long time in the military to work on those skills and I'm still not perfect!

Going back to the song, maybe Wallen is showing us how easy it is to sing a pop song. All you need is an excellent beat; a few swear words, say stuff over and over, and you have a hit!

The guy can sing though his country album is fantastic.

I am not going to give these presenters a total break though. There is no Fitness "Professional" in swearing in front of people you don't know, and there is no professional when you post things like "AF" on your Insta or FB page.

I posted something on my personal Facebook page about how disappointed I was with the swearing during the conference, and it felt nice to see that I wasn't the only one who thinks like this.

Agree?

But I guess it's like they say, "Different strokes for different folks."

Let me know what you think in the comments or if you have a training question, send it my way!
